The cannelle beach in Giglio island
|
Giglio Island, situated in
front of the promontory of Argentario, from which it is
separated by 16 km stretch of the sea, is formed by a
granite mass covered with mediterranean vegetation
alternating with large pine forests and numerous vineyards
which enable the production of the famous "Ansonaco" wine.
Giglio Island is 8,7 km long. Its total surface is 21,2km2.
The coast, 27 km long, is made up of rocks, of smooth cliffs
and suggestive bays: Arenella, Cannelle, Caldane and Campese,
the biggest one with its little homonymous village.
The two other more important inhabited centres are Giglio
Porto, the principal commercial centre with its
characteristic mooring point, and Giglio Castello with its
marvellous medieval village entirely surrounded by walls,
which dominate the two sides of the Island. The principal
attractions of the island are unspoilt nature, a mild
mediterranean climate, and a clear and transparent sea,
nowadays found in very few places. For these reasons Giglio
Island is a perfect place for nature lovers, for a summer
stay but also in the other sea-sons. Boats leave from Porto
Santo Stefano to reach Giglio Island. From Easter to
September there are 9-11 daily round trips and 6 during the
winter season: the crossing takes 55 minutes.
